Why Karnataka by-elections are important for BJP in South

Karnataka: The by-elections for the 15 assembly constituencies to be held in Karnataka on Thursday are important for the BJP and the Congress on more than one vote. It is the only prominent place in the South where both national parties are among the primary candidates for power. While the results will clearly affect the future of the only Bharatiya Janata Party government in South India, the implications of not having a clear mandate of at least six seats and ‘Team Yeddy’ retaining power in the Assembly may result in the Mahabharata-type Can. In Maharashtra, the unexpected happened when BJP’s longtime ally the Shiva Sena joined hands with the NCP and Congress to keep the BJP out of the office. It is precisely this type of domino effect that can turn out to be the BJP’s nightmare, after a series of losses in major states like Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh.
In Karnataka, the bypolls are important for the BJP because it will decide the future of the BS Yediyurappa government which currently has 105 legislators and one independen .The results of today’s by-elections are also important for the Congress which is reviving its political fortunes, especially after the recent developments in Maharashtra. His love-hate-relationship-ship with the Janata Dal (S) will get attention if they win more than nine seats between them in today’s by-elections. In such a situation, the BJP may be looking at exit from the government. The polling began as scheduled in the morning and was going on with a note in all 15 assembly constituencies. Voting was going on at some places due to EVM malfunction during polling but the entire polling was going on smoothly.
