On September 11, 2001, 19 militants belonging to the Islamic extremist group Al Qaeda hijacked four airplanes and carried out suicide attacks against targets in the United States. Two aircraft were flown to the World Trade Center’s twin towers in New York City, a third aircraft crashed into the Pentagon just outside Washington, DC, and a fourth plane crashed into a field in Shanksville, Pennsylvania.
Nearly 3,000 people were killed during the 9/11 terrorist attacks, which launched major US initiatives to combat terrorism and defined the presidency of George W. Bush.
The impact left a ditch, burning holes near the 80th floor of the 110-story skyscraper, killing hundreds of people and leaving hundreds trapped in the higher floors.
Minutes after the first incident, a second Boeing 767- United Airlines Flight 175 headed to the World Trade Center and sliced ??into the South Tower near the 60th floor.
Soon after destroying the Pentagon’s portion of the third plane, the fourth flight crashed near Shanksville, Pennsylvania, after a fight by passengers at the US military headquarters in Arlington, Virginia.
