Odisha government procures 1 lakh quintal ragi in kharif season

Bhubaneswar: The Odisha government has proposed to buy 1 lakh quintal ragi from kharif production this year.
The government has decided that children will be part of Ragi Lado Anganwadis. The decision was taken at a meeting of a high power committee on the Odisha Mills Mission held under the chairmanship of Development Commissioner Suresh Chandra Mohapatra.
During the meeting in the conference hall of Bhubaneswar’s Public Service Building, Planning and Convergence Department, the committee proposed to add millet in the mid-day meal in the districts falling under the District Mineral Fund (DMF).
At the meeting, Agriculture Production Commissioner, Pradeep Kumar Mohapatra, Principal Secretary, DAFE, Dr. Saurabh Garg, including others were present.
Principal Secretary, ST and SC Vikas Ranjana Chopra, Commissioner cum Secretary FS and CW, Sahyog Veer Vikram Jadav, Director of Agriculture and Food Production, Dr. M. Muthukumar, MD TDCCOL SR Jadhav were present.
The committee discussed the Millet’s mission and various aspects of strengthening the scheme across the state. During 2018-19, a survey was conducted to get feedback from the people after PDS distribution of ragi in 7 districts. Integration with various government programs to increase millet consumption were some of the points raised in the market linkage meeting with the larger agency for sustainability of millet farming.

The special program for promotion of millet in tribal areas of Odisha (Odisha Mills Mission) was launched by the Government of Odisha in 2017-18 in 30 blocks of 7 districts. It was expanded to 72 blocks in 2018-19, covering 14 districts. The program is funded under the state plan in 65 blocks in 13 districts. 7 blocks of Keonjhar district have been funded through the District Mineral Fund.
Government. India advised all states to adopt OMM model. The Government of India set up a task force (Under JS Crops, DAC, MoA) to revise the NFSM Nutri Grain Guidelines. Niti Aayog to promote OMM model on inclusion of millet in ICDS, MDM and PDS.
