Mirabai Chanu wins gold at the Commonwealth Weightlifting Championship

Samoa: Former world champion Mirabai Chanu won gold at the opening day of the Commonwealth Championship in Weightlifting on Tuesday.
Mirabai raised a total of 191 kilograms (84 kg + 107 kg) in 49 kg for women of the elderly to win a gold medal at the Olympic qualifying event.
Jhilli Dalabehra also won first place on the podium with a 154kg (70kg + 94kg) lift in a 45kg event for older women who are not the category of Olympic weight.
In the category of women over 55 kg, Soroikhaibam Bindyarani Devi and Matsa Santoshi won gold and silver medals.
The qualification process for the 2020 Olympics is based on the performance of weight weights in six events over a period of 18 months, out of which four best results reported by the lifters will be considered.
The Indian contingent has so far had 13 medals – including eight gold, three silver and two bronze medals in senior, junior and youth categories.
Chief Minister Odisha Naveen Patnaik went to Twitter and congratulated Odisha weightlifters for outstanding results in the tournament.
