Jharsuguda Collector suspended for going against Orissa HC

Cuttack: The Odisha government on Wednesday suspended Jharsuguda Collector Jyoti Ranjan Pradhan for going against the decision of the Orissa High Court and canceling the liquor store license.
The Orissa High Court has directed the state government to suspend Jharsuguda Collector Jyoti Ranjan Pradhan for violating the court order regarding cancellation of liquor store license.
While the court has ordered the government to investigate, whose report will be provided by the Revenue Secretary, the next hearing will be on August 27.
The case was filed by Bina Patnaik after hearing the case.
Remarkably, the petitioner was given a liquor license to open a counter at Brajrajnagar in the district. However, following stiff opposition by the locals, he was unable to open the counter during the allotted time.
But even after this, the Excise Department demanded to collect tax. Challenging the Excise Department’s move, Patnaik filed a case.
Subsequently, the High Court heard the matter for the first time on March 29, 2019 and issued a notice to the government with an order not to take any drastic step against the petitioner.
The Collector issued an order to lease the liquor store while the case was subordinate. A suit was filed in the court against him. But he did not satisfy the court with the necessary evidence.
