Government opens subsidized onion outlets in Cuttack

Cuttack: Worried over rising prices of onions, the Odisha Supply Department on Thursday started selling onions at Rs 49 per kg from fair price shops in Cuttack.
According to the news, kitchen staples in retail, which are being sold for Rs 60-70 per kg, are available to consumers at a controlled rate of Rs 49 per kg at CDA, Bakshi Bazaar and College Square in Cuttack.
“The government has decided to sell onions at Rs 49 per kg through fair price shops. We hope to make onions available at subsidised rates within 10 days,” said Amar Mohapatra, District food supply department officer.
“Without getting any profit, the government is supplying 2 kg onion per consumer. The shops are open from 8 am to 12 noon in the morning and 4 pm to 8 pm in the evening,” Mohapatra said.
Ahead of the possible cyclone, a heavy rush has been seen at every fair shops in the city. Officials said the higher wholesale prices will continue to impact retail prices in the state for the next couple of weeks.
