EOW nabs man for defrauding NGOs of Rs 62 lakhs

Bhubaneswar: The Economic Offences Wing (EOW) of the Crime Branch on Tuesday arrested a 29-year-old man for allegedly defrauding several NGOs of over Rs 62 lakhs.
The accused, Sudhir Sahoo, is the Managing Director of M/s Rudhitapa Institute of Technology & Management Pvt. Ltd. He hails from Bagoi in Kujonga police jurisdiction of Jagatsinghpur district.
Sahoo was arrested on the basis of a complaint lodged by Bijaya Kumar Mohapatra, secretary of an NGO named Harijan Adivasi Mahila Samiti (HAMS) in Nayagarh district which engaged in the upliftment of health, sanitation and skill development of needy persons.
The complainant had alleged that the accused had misappropriated huge amount of money from different NGOs including his NGO on the pretext of giving lucrative remunerations for imparting various skill development programmes.
The investigation revealed that the accused opened its office in a rented house at Saptasati Bihar, Palasuni, Bhubaneswar and induced many NGOs engaged in imparting training in different skill development programmes with false assurance that his company is having franchise of National Institute of Electronics & Information Technology (NIEIT) it by Ministry of Electronics & Information Technology, Govt. of India and also Khadi Village Industries Commission (KVIC), Govt. of India.
The investigation further revealed that the accused induced these NGOs to pay a certain amount for a training and after completion of training his company would give six times more of that amount to the concerned NGOs after submission of the invoice of completion of training. The training fee differs from course to course and to the tenure of training.
“The accused cheated 15 NGOs of Rs 62,12,311. He has also cheated many other NGOs and persons, which is under verification and the misappropriated amount may exceed more than one crore. Further investigation of the case is continuing,” the EOW said.
