BJP placed on the bench of Rajya Sabha seats from Odisha with BJD backing

New Delhi: Bharatiya Janata Party on Friday appointed Ashwini Baishnab, a former bureaucrat, for his candidate for the Rajya Sabha police in Odisha, and state-run Biju Janata Dal has also announced his support, making his victory almost safe.
The development points to rising vibrations between the two parties after BJP launched a strong campaign against BJD at the recent Lok Sabha and parliamentary polls, emerging as the main challenger to the party’s chief minister, Naveen Patnaik.
“The party has decided that Ashwini Baishnab will be the candidate of the Bharatiya Janata Party for the upcoming filling of Rajya Sabha from Odisha,” BJP said.
A few minutes later, Mr. Patnaik told reporters in the country that Prime Minister Narendra Modi and BJP President Amit Shah talked with him and that his party would support Ashwini Baishnab.
With 112 members in the national assembly with 146 seats, the BJD was in a position to win the filling in all three places. The BJP has 23 seats.
