18,683 road accident deaths in Odisha in last 4 years: Transport Minister

Bhubaneswar: Odisha reported the death of 18,683 people in 40,852 road accidents in the last 4 years to Commerce and Transport Minister Padmanabha Behera in the state assembly.
The Commerce and Transport Minister of the state, in a written reply to BJD Salpur MLA Prashant Behera, said that in 2016, there were 10,532 accidents, resulting in 4463 deaths. Similarly, 10,855 road accidents were reported in 2017, resulting in 4,790 deaths. In addition, in 2018, there were 11,262 road accidents, with 5315 deaths. In addition, 4,115 deaths have been reported in 8,203 accidents till September this year.
The Minister further informed that several steps have been taken to curb road accidents in the state. While driving licences are cancelled for violating the new motor vehicle rules, 37 interceptors with speed detection radar and breathe analysers have been deployed to put a check on drunken driving, Behera said.
Replying to another question, the Minister has said that driving licences of 5,121 persons were suspended in 2018 due to reckless driving resulting in accidents and by October 2019 driving licences of 3,889 persons have been suspended. If necessary steps can be taken for cancelling these driving licences, the Minister added.
